Painting is licensed building work in Queensland once a job tops $3,300 in labour and materials — which most whole-house repaints and full exterior jobs do. The relevant trade class is the QBCC Painting and Decorating licence. Beyond getting the finish right, a licensed painter is accountable within the same building-work framework as other trades: on qualifying residential work over the threshold, only a licensed contractor can trigger Queensland Home Warranty cover, and licensed painters carry the insurance and rectification obligations an unlicensed cash operator does not. Homes built before roughly 1970 may also carry lead-based paint, whose safe removal is a further reason to use a proper contractor.
