In Queensland, carpentry becomes licensed building work once a job is worth more than $3,300 in labour and materials combined — decks, pergolas, structural framing, restumping and built-in joinery all cross that line easily. A QBCC Carpentry licence is the trade class that covers this work, and it matters beyond legality: only a licensed contractor can pay the premium into the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme, so an unlicensed cash job on a deck or extension leaves you with no cover for non-completion, defects or subsidence. Carpentry is not one of the classes licensable at any value — that list runs to plumbing and drainage, gasfitting, fire protection, chemical termite management, building design, site classification and completed residential building inspection (QBCC Regulation 2018 sch 1 s 2) — but a sub-threshold carpentry item stays licensable when a licensee performs it as part of a contract for building work worth more than $3,300, so a small job inside a renovation contract does not fall out of the system.
