It comes down to value, not the type of job. Carpentry sits at schedule 2, part 16 of the QBCC Regulation 2018, and building work of $3,300 or less doesn't need a licence unless it falls on a short any-value list — schedule 2, parts 11–14, 18, 19, 36, 51 and 56 — which carpentry is not on. So framing, a deck, stairs or a pergola frame worth more than $3,300 in labour and materials combined needs a licensed carpenter; a small job under that — hanging a door, a minor repair — doesn't need one on its own, though the work still has to meet building standards. One exception worth knowing: a sub-threshold item stays licensable when a licensee carries it out as part of a contract for building work worth more than $3,300 overall, so a job can't be sliced into smaller pieces to dodge the line. Ask for a QBCC licence number on anything over $3,300; every carpenter on this page has been checked against the register.

Often, yes — and it's worth separating the two questions. A very low, unroofed deck or a small open structure can be exempt from needing building approval, but a roofed patio, anything taller or larger, or work attached to the house in certain ways usually needs it. QBCC's own guidance ties Home Warranty cover to that approval question directly: insurance is required once a project needs building or plumbing approval on anything attached to the home and its value passes $3,300. That means a small, genuinely exempt deck can sit outside Home Warranty even when it's built by a fully licensed carpenter — exempt from approval isn't the same as unregulated, but it does mean no warranty cover if something goes wrong later. Confirm which category your job falls into with your carpenter or a building certifier before work starts.

Near the beachfront — Mooloolaba, Coolum, Noosa and similar exposed suburbs — salt-laden air corrodes standard fasteners faster than it does further inland, so carpenters here lean toward stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised screws and brackets rather than standard-grade fittings. Timber choice matters too: durable hardwoods handle sun and humidity better than treated pine left fully exposed, though pine remains a reasonable lower-cost choice for a sheltered or lower-budget job. Whatever the species and fixings, drainage detailing underneath a deck and regular maintenance affect how long it lasts as much as the materials themselves do. Ask your carpenter what grade of fixings they're specifying, not just what timber.

Your pool barrier governs the layout, not the other way around. Queensland's pool safety standard requires a barrier at least 1,200mm high with a continuous 900mm non-climbable zone around it, and QBCC's own guidance specifically names deck ledges and steps as climbable objects that have to be removed, repositioned or shielded within that zone — exactly the kind of thing decking against a pool fence creates by default if it isn't designed around the rule. A carpenter building decking near a pool needs to account for this from the layout stage; retrofitting a barrier around decking that already ignores the non-climbable zone is a far more expensive fix than getting it right the first time.

Queensland's mandatory termite management standard, AS 3660.1, applies to every new residential structure built here, and the Sunshine Coast's warm, humid climate keeps subterranean termite activity a year-round risk rather than a seasonal one. That's why a termite management system has to be designed in from the framing stage — subfloor ventilation, ant capping and drainage detailing get as much attention from a good carpenter as the visible timber does. Termite treatment itself is a separate licensed trade from carpentry: a carpenter frames and fixes timber, a licensed pest technician manages the chemical or physical barrier, so a new deck or extension often involves both.
